What one piano piece would you like to learn?

August 31, 2017 By Dave F Leave a Comment

What piece of music or song would you like to learn? What was the song that inspired you to learn to play or did you just have a burning desire to play the instrument?

The piano is a wonderful, expressive instrument that can be played in many different styles to suit different moods.  Also no one person plays a song the same adding more variation. It’s part of the attraction.

For me I had a desire to learn “Imagine” by John Lennon, “Your Song” by Elton John, “Don’t stop Believing” by Journey and “Lady Madonna” by The Beatles.  The list evolved and still does, which is great and keeps you motivated.

I guess “Imagine” was that one song where I thought I’ll give the piano a go. Being relatively easy in technique and song structure is a plus, so it was a good choice. I still play it from time to time.

I have a desire to eventually learn Moonlight Sonata at some stage – this is a bolder ambition and has always been there, but I think it’s sensible to set your sights lower and choose an easier song to master whether that’s a classical or popular piece.

Finding a good teacher (if required) and accurate transcription is also important. That is one reason this website exists.  You Tube have many examples of pieces to learn with some great teachers and methods to show you the song.  Some people may respond better to certain videos/methods than others, so have a good look around.

Shawn Cheek’s repertoire is huge and you may find his work is a good place to start. As mentioned on my review, the first video of a piece is free on You Tube with further lessons available on his website for a small subscription.

Music notation is widely available now from Amazon or retailers like Musicroom. Apps such as Music notes also have digital notation and tools allowing the music to move as you play with a desired tempo, allowing you to learn/play in a different key and highlight certain sections.  Sometimes these apps offer free songs, especially those that are free domain ie very old and free to all.

So make a list – Big or small. Have songs on there that are achievable, some that are a stretch (to keep you challenged) and an ambitious song – that “one day” song to have as an ultimate goal. Of course this list will change over time as you improve or find a new piece of music that is inspiring to you.
